All-on-4® dental implants are a popular teeth replacement option for a number of reasons. But how do you know if All-on-4 is right for you? Of course, the best person to ask is a dentist. However, if you are considering this option, here is an overview of what you can expect from All-on-4.
About the All-in-4® procedure
All-on-4 replaces a full arch of lower teeth and a full arch of upper teeth. Not all people who are missing teeth need full arch tooth replacements, but those who do may benefit from this permanent tooth replacement option. All-on-4 works by placing four dental implants in one's upper and/or lower jaw. These four implants are strategically placed so they can effectively support an entire arch of teeth.
Recovering from the All-on-4 procedure
Recovery is a crucial part of the success of any procedure. Here is some information on how to make your recovery process from All-on-4 go smoothly. Those undergoing the process should carefully follow any recovery instructions given to them by their dental health professional to support the success of their procedure.
Rest
Patients should rest and relax for a minimum of three days after having the implants placed. Even if one feels better before the end of this period, one should still rest and relax to support the body's healing process. Suggested things to do during this time include reading, doing crossword puzzles, and walking slowly around the house for a minute or two twice a day.
Minimal bleeding and swelling
Patients can expect to experience minimal bleeding and some degree of swelling after dental implant placement. Biting on a clean piece of gauze for about half an hour can help to stop bleeding. Swelling is a natural reaction, and any swelling present tends to subside within three days after undergoing implant placement.
Soft food and drink choices
Eating soft foods is a must for about the first six weeks. This allows the implants to fully heal without being disturbed, a very important part of the healing process. Examples of soft foods include mashed potatoes, pudding, ice cream, scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, applesauce, pancakes, pasta, and yogurt. Suitable drinks include smoothies, popsicles, and protein shakes. Keep in mind that these cannot be consumed using a straw.
Good oral hygiene
Practicing good oral hygiene is key during the recovery process. It is essential to practice good oral care to prevent infection and encourage the healing process. Gentle brushing and flossing are necessary, as is rinsing the mouth after eating and using a water flosser to ensure all debris is removed from the mouth.
